Lead From the Front

“It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem...” (2 Samuel 11:1)

Most everyone who has ever read a Bible, or been to church, knows something about the story of David and Bathsheba.

King David is on his housetop getting some fresh air late one evening, when he sees a beautiful woman bathing on the housetop across the way. He intensely desires the woman, and sends his servants to bring her to him so he can 'have' her.

Only problem was, she was already married to one of his faithful soldiers; Urriah, who was where he was supposed to beout battling king David's enemies.

The story only gets worse. David gets Bathsheba pregnant. And in an attempt to try and hide his wicked sin, he has Urriah killed by sending him into the most dangerous part of the battle. Out of sight, out of mind. Or so he thinks...

And isn't that when we also get into the most trouble?

When we are somewhere where we know we are not supposed to be.

Had David been the King and leader he was supposed to be, he would have been out leading his troops in battlenot at home looking at a naked woman from the discreet comfort of his palatial housetop.

In the bible passage quoted we see where David set himself up to fall:

"It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle..."

It was spring time; the time of year when kings went out to battle. Not a time to be at home eating grapes, while your soldiers and commanders were out giving their lives in battle, to protect your precious kingdom.

And while I know it is only speculation on my part, as the biblical text does not specifically state it, my guess is that David had seen this woman bathing on her housetop before. And he most likely stayed at home because he wanted to get another eyeful of her bathing. Or worse, he had been scheming a way to have another man's wife...while her husband was away at war.

I pray we all let the truths of this biblical account of David and Bathsheba sink into our hearts and let the Holy Spirit reveal areas in our own minds and lives where we are likely headed for a fall.

Lead From the Front.

1.  Be where you're supposed to be.

If you know sin lies down that street, don't go down there.

Speaking as a husband and father to other husbands and fathers; if your loving wife has dinner waiting for you at home, don't stop off at the bar for a drink, where you know single women are always present, looking for some action.

You should be at home, loving your wife and helping her in any way she needs help, spending time being a Dad to your children. When's the last time you read the Bible to your kids? Played catch with your son? Told your daughter how special she is and how much you love her? Took your wife out on a romantic date night? Or made her breakfast? Be where you're supposed to be.

2.  Be who God made you to be.

First and foremost, your first and most holy 'calling' before God is to be a husband and a father, if that is what God has given you to be faithful over.  Not your job, and not even duties at your church. When you stand before God at the judgment seat of Christ, you will give Him an account of what kind of husband and father you were. Everything else comes after that.

Has God placed people in your life who need love, encouragement and discipleship? Then be faithful to do that, as God provides and leads. Has He given you the gift of playing an instrument? Then be faithful to use that gift to worship Him. Has He gifted you to teach the Bible? Teach kids? Show mercy? Has He given you the ability to be a leader or administrator? Then use the gifts He has given you to the extent of your gifting. Be faithful.

3.  Be content with where God has you right now.

If God has you selling shoes part time, don't be looking for a way out of the 'fix' you're in. God probably has you there for a reason... for His purpose. The Bible says:

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.” (Psalm 37:23)

God has foreordained, or 'ordered' our steps.

Knowing our choices and the paths we will choose in life, He arranges circumstances in our lives to bring us closer to Him and accomplish His will. We usually fail to see it or acknowledge it. But He is control, not us. Do you need to be humbled? Then trust me, He will put you in a situation that will bring you to your knees to where you will bow to Him and cry out to Him. He has done that with me many times in my Christian life. And I will be eternally grateful to God that He did so.

Jesus taught that we must be faithful to do the few things He has given us to do. When He is satisfied that we have been faithful over those few things, then He may decide to give us more to do. But we must first learn to be content with where He has us, and what He has us doing right now.

4.  Be faithful to love Him who saved you and called you.

Jesus said the first and greatest commandment is:

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30)

Loving Jesus means to keep all of His commandments (See John 14:21).

Loving someone means to be faithful. And hopefully you do so because you love them, and you want to be faithful to them. Not because you're commanded to do so. I am faithful to my wife because I love her. And I should that much more be faithful to God who loved me first and gave Himself for me. True love is faithful and obedient. And God deserves all of our heart, all of the time.

Jesus led from the front.

He didn't sit back in a comfortable palace, commanding His servants to go and do what He was not willing to do. He led by example. Forgive those who curse you and spitefully use you. Love your enemies and pray for them. Give to him who has need. Clothe the naked. Feed the hungry. Help the poor. Set free those who are held captive. Show compassion and mercy to all. Speak the truth in love. Preach the Gospel. Demonstrate true love by giving your very life for the sake of others.

Jesus said:

"Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends." (John 15:13)

One who leads from the front is one who dies to his or her self will first. One who forgives first. One who shows mercy first. One who puts others needs ahead of his or her own.

Lead from the front.

Love Incarnate

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
—Jesus

In this rush-rush season of marketing, madness and materialism, while we may see the occasional scene of the Nativity on a front lawn or Christmas card, sadly, the baby Jesus seems to be losing popularity in this politically correct world. For many, the Christmas tree is more popular than the Christ Himself.

What does Christmas really mean to most people anymore?

Big family gatherings? Lavish turkey dinners with all the trimmings? Lots of presents?

For me, Christmas means Love came down. God came to save me; something I could never do for myself. The Bible says, "God is love."

Love incarnate.

It boggles the mind that the almighty God chose to humble Himself and come down to earth in the form of a tiny baby, born in a cold, smelly stable.

Ultimate power displays itself in ultimate humilityall to demonstrate true Love in it's most pure, selfless and sacrificial form.

Jesus taught that those who want to believe in Him will, and those who don't, wont.

For most of my life I refused to believe in this "Jesus stuff."  I arrogantly mocked and rejected any message I heard about my need for a Savior.

But the God of Love did not come down to a world that has no need of saving.

The name Jesus means, "He will save His people from their sins." He came to save you because He loves you.

Will you let that pure, selfless love sink deep into your skeptical heart today and melt it?

Jesus said:

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." (Revelation 3:20)

The God of Love stands gently knocking on the door of your heart today, asking to be invited in.

And only you can unlock the door from the inside and let Him in.

If you choose to...

What is The Solution?

“For nation will rise against nation” (Matthew 24:7)

In a moment of anger and frustration over the current destruction and lawlessness in Ferguson, Missouri, I recently made some online comments that I now deeply regret. I was not being part of the solution, but rather, part of the problem. And for that I apologize to all.

What is the solution, if any, to generations of racial tension, division, hatred, violence, and injustice?

The great divide in our country is not a problem of black against white, liberal against conservative, democrat against republican

The solution is first realizing that the problem is a spiritual problem—an issue of the heart.

I've learned and experienced, that what comes out of a man is only what was already inside him. Hatred, vengeance, even murder—are in the heart of human beings.

Jesus said murder begins in the heart.

"For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies." (Matthew 15:19)

Maybe you’ve never physically killed someone. But to Christ, hating someone is the same as murdering him. Lusting after someone who is not your wife or husband is just the same as actually committing the physical act of adultery.

Man looks at what is on the outside of a person, their appearance, but God sees the heart.

So what is the solution?

Jesus said, “A man must be born again.”

The nature or ‘spirit’ of mankind is sinful and fallen. We need a spiritual re-birth—a new heart. And only God through Jesus Christ can give that.

The last six thousand years of world history is proof enough that man on his own does not possess the power or goodness within himself to solve the world’s problems of hatred, racism, division, and war.

Only Christ is the solution.

If you really are open, and are searching for truth, for the solution, for the spiritual re-birth that only Christ can give, then you will find it through Him.

And you start by crying out to God. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you.

Then begin with reading the Bible, John chapter 3, verses 1-21.

If you genuinely seek Christ you will find Him.

This is the solution to the world’s problems.

Set Free From The Past

“Forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead.” (Philippians 3:13)

Dwelling on the past.

We all do it.

Someone hurt us. Rejected us. Broke our heart. Neglected us. Even abused us. They weren't there for us when we needed them. They told us we were a disappointment to them.

Everyone has, at one time in their life, carried around some serious emotional baggage from their past.

And sadly, many people still carry it.

Wouldn't you like to, once and for all, be free from the oppressive, heavy weight of that baggage?

Personally, I know only one Counselor who was able to set me free from the pain, shame and oppression of my troubled past.

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

Doesn't it give you great hope that God Himself is your Counselor!

And what He spoke through Paul, He speaks to us today, that we have to forget those things which are behind us. Forget the past. And reach forward to those things which are ahead.

Part of forgetting the past is forgiving those who hurt us.

"Easier said than done" you say?

Bitterness and unforgiveness will destroy a person.

A friend of mine once said,

"Unforgiveness is like drinking poison, hoping the other person will die."

Choosing to forgive someone who hurt you is not saying that what they did to you was okay.

What they did to you was not okay.

Forgiveness means that you, from your heart, are choosing to release that person from the debt of your unforgiveness.

And in the process, you are setting yourself free from your self-imposed bitter prison.

You can be set free. Your broken heart can be healed.

Jesus said:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed.” (Luke 4:18)

The Mighty GodJesus. His name is also called Wonderful, Counselor, Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace.

You will know His peace when you choose to forgive the people and forget the hurts of your past, and look forward to the wonderful things that are ahead for all who trust in Jesus and look for His appearing.

Jesus promised us:

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.  In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:1-3)

In our opening verse, Paul not only said to forget those things which are behind us. But he said we're to be reaching forward to those things which are ahead.

Jesus is our future, but He is also present with us right now. Reach for Him. Cry out to Him. Trust in Him. Reach out for those things He has for you right nowlike the people He has placed all around you who need His love, kindness and compassion.

Paul said:

"Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13-15)

The goal Paul speaks of here is to make Jesus known to whoever will listen, to whoever will hear and believe the Gospel and receive Jesus as Savior and Lord.

And the prize is when Jesus calls us upward, to be with Him in the place He has prepared for us. And that prize is free. You can't earn it. It's a free gift to all those who have chosen to believe in Jesus as Savior and who have surrendered their hearts to Him who loves us; having died for us while we were still sinners.

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

Godly, bible-based counseling can be very beneficial.

But there is only One whose name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,

His name is Jesus.

No matter how bad your past was, no matter where you're at, no matter what you've done, reach out for Him today.

Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted, to bring liberty to the captives, and to set free those who are oppressed.

In God's Image

"So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." (Genesis 1:27)

"God created man in His own image."

This is, in my opinion, perhaps, one of the most misunderstood passages in the entire Bible.

What image (or likeness) is God?

"God is not a man, that He should lie." (Numbers 23:19)

God is Spirit. He is invisible. Jesus said,

"No one has seen God at any time." (John 1:18).

God is not a man, He is eternal Spirit. And He has given us an eternal spirit. Our current body is not eternal.

Thus, to be created in "God's own image" is to be made an invisible, eternal spirit—the life force that is who we are at our very essence.

The Son of Man, Jesus, is said to be the "image of the invisible God." (Colossians 1:15). Jesus "became flesh." He did not exist in a fleshly body in Heaven prior to coming to earth. He was eternal Spirit; He was with God and He was God. (See John 1:1).

Only God is good. All men are sinners.

Man cannot try to justify his sinful human condition, no matter what that is, by claiming, "I was born this way", or, "I was made in God's image."

We were all born sinners, and we are all commanded to repent and turn from our sin and turn to God.

"Truly, these (former) times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man (Jesus Christ) whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead." (Acts 17:30-31)

But you can be spared from God's coming judgment by surrendering to His current and eternal love.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

God is Love and Love Never Fails.

The Bridge

“Between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able.” (Luke 16:26)

Imagine you are driving along on a dark, stormy night.

Thick fog and blinding rain obscure every curve on the narrow, winding road, high above the jagged rocks and raging sea. Something catches your eye as the lightning flashes, and you stop your car and get out to investigate. The bridge has been washed out. And where pavement once lay, a bottomless chasm now vanishes into the night below.

You rush back to your car, pop open the trunk, and furiously tear apart the contents, searching for your emergency flares. You race 100 yards back up the road you just came down, and light two of the flares, ready to warn any unsuspecting traveler, of the imminent danger which lies unseen just ahead.

Soon a set of car lights pierce through the fog and are coming straight at you. As you frantically wave the flares high above your head and shout "stop!" The truck finally screeches to a halt on the wet pavement, just inches from your feet. The driver jumps out and screams at you, "What is your problem?" You immediately respond, "Sir, the storm washed the bridge out just ahead. Please, I implore you sir, go no further, or you will plunge to your death!"

The driver angrily responds, "You're crazy! That bridge is solid steel! A perfect example of man's finest engineering. Nothing could possibly ever destroy it. Now get out of my way you crazy fool, I have somewhere I have to be!"

But no matter how much you plead with him to stay with you in safety, he drives blindly on into the blackness of night, plunging to his certain death.

And such is the life and message of the follower of Jesus Christ.

Ours is a message of hope and salvation, in the face of imminent danger and eternal darkness. But to many, our message is unpopular. People don't want to be warned to go no further, that imminent danger and death lies just ahead if they continue on the same road they are currently on.

Even Jesusthe God of love and lightwho came to save the world, was murdered, and nailed to a wooden cross like a common criminal for bringing His message of love, grace and salvation.

All men have sinned and need a savior.

Jesus is the Bridge.

You who reject Christ may hate the message and the messenger.

But consider that we who stand on the road on a dark night, waving safety flares high above our heads, shouting out a warning, "Danger, Bridge out!" do so in love. Not in hate, and not in judgment.

To allow someone to drive blindly on, not warning them of the imminent danger ahead, is the opposite of love.

Jesus is the Bridge.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

Love is The Answer

"He who does not love does not know God, for God is love." (1 John 4:8)

What is the meaning of Life?

Why are we here? What is our purpose? What will make the world a better place?

Most people will probably say "Love." Yes. Love is the answer.

On that we can all agree.

So if love is the answer, and most people will tell you they are loving and they try to love others, why is the world in such a mess? Why is there so much division, hate, war, violence, and strife among people?

Because most do not truly know love.

God is love.

And if God is love, then knowing and loving God is the answer to the world's problems.

But many people today either refuse to believe in God, or they really don't want anything to do with Him personally, even if they say they believe there is a God.

Many say, "god is simply an 'energy' in the universe, so we can't know God personally."

But that is untrue.

God said:

"Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:12-13)

If you really want to know God, all you need to do is pray to Him and He will listen. And if you seek Him with all of your heart, He promises you will find Him.

The almighty, invisible Spirit; the immortal God, made a way for you to know Him personally, as Father. And He did this by sending His own Son, Jesus, to come to earth, and become "flesh." To become a manthe perfect Man; who came to restore relationship with God and mankind.

What caused the separation between God and man in the first place?

We did.

By breaking God's law, by sinning in the very beginning. The first man and woman (Adam and Eve) disobeyed God and ate that which was forbidden. (Read Genesis chapters 2-3).

Man caused the separation; a bottomless chasm, a breach, that man on his own cannot ever repair.

So God Himself made a way by sending His Son Jesus to repair the breach. He is the bridge between God and man - the only bridge.

This is why Jesus said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6)

All men are sinners in God's eyes. We have all broken God's laws (see the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20:1-17, and Romans 3:23).

You may say you're a "good person." But God Judges man according to His standards of perfection, not according to ours.

This is why we all need Jesus as our Savior. He is the bridge between God and man. And there is no other way to reach God. We cannot climb our way up to Him by doing good.

That is why He came down to us as Jesus ChristGod the Son.

God is Love.

And Love is the answer.

Pray to Him and seek Him with all of your heart and you will find Him.

God is Love, and Love Never Fails.

Powerful or Powerless

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

When you pick up your Bible, do you ever stop and think, this book is literally alive?

The word of God is living and powerful.

Stop for a moment now, and read and really meditate on all the words in Hebrews 4:12.

The words of the Bible are literally God-breathed. All of them. (See 2 Timothy 3:16).

Knowing this, why do so many Christians, churches, and ministries try to reach people through worldly wisdom and philosophy?

We seem to strive so hard to be hip and culturally relevant, hoping to attract people using virtually the same methods the world does. It seems like we're trying to make Jesus "cool" to people using hip bands playing the latest modern "Christian" music. But how regenerative and spiritually transforming has worldly philosophy and hip music proven to be?

We're known by our fruit.

Over the last twenty years of my walk with Christ, I have witnessed first-hand, churches or believers who claim; "preaching the gospel the same old way will not work on this current generation; we have to say and do things differently now."

And I have seen one such "culturally relevant" church close its doors forever. Fruitless, powerless.

This particular former church was situated in the middle of the downtown in their city. They played hip, cool music. Served great coffee. Tried to love people. And they made sure the name on the door sounded nothing like a church or a ministry. They said, "We don't want anyone to know we're a church. Our part is to play music and serve coffee. God's part is to do the rest."

And God shut them down. Closed their doors.

Preaching the gospel and making it a priority to pray we're not part of their game plan.

Since then, I have seen worldly wisdom and philosophy slowly creep back into the Church in subtle, diabolically camouflaged ways. "We have to do things differently now" they say.

2,000 years ago, Jesus' Disciples never tried to reach people through philosophy. Even in his day, the Apostle Paul did not use philosophy as a means of connecting with the philosophers in Athens.

“Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection. And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak? For you are bringing some strange things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean.” For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.

Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: “God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”
(Acts 17:18-31)

It says that Paul "preached to them Jesus and the resurrection." And he preached repentance, and God's judgement of the world, by Jesus Christ.

Paul was a well read, extremely intelligent man, who could have easily debated with these wise philosophers on their level.

But instead, he preached Jesus.

In another letter to the Church at Corinth, Paul said:

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18-24)

Here's the bottom line:

"It pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe."

Paul said:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes.” (Romans 1:16)

While it may seem old fashioned or un-hip to preach the "foolish" message of the Gospel, that alone is where the power of God to salvation is.

Only the word of God is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heartwhich is where we will truly connect with people. Everybody hurts. Everyone has experienced loneliness, pain and rejection. Everyone wants to be loved.

Sow to the spirit, not to the flesh.

Worldly philosophy and man's wisdom is absolutely powerless, and will fall flat at their feet. Fruitless.

Living Godly in Jesus Christ

“All who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” (2 Timothy 3:12)

Persecution?

That doesn't seem to be something that Christians in comfortable, prosperous America, are experiencing much of, here at home.

Have you been jailed, beaten, or tortured lately for sharing your faith in your U.S. city?

I searched throughout the book of Acts this morning to see what the main focus was by Paul and the other Disciples, and what they were persecuted for.

Any guesses what the answer is?

Preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Here's what Paul preached:

”Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

In that short passage, Paul twice said, "According to the Scriptures."

Jesus was crucified on a cross and died there for our sins, He was buried, and then rose from the dead on the third dayaccording to the Scriptures.

If you are trying to "share your faith" with unsaved people, but it doesn't include the truth that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, was buried and then rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures, then it's not the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Over the last twenty or so years of being a Christian, I have heard many religious people say the following, or something close to it:

"All I know is we're just supposed to love people."

And in context, what every one of these people meant by this, is we're to never offend people by preaching God's Word to them, we're just supposed to be loving and nice to them.

But let's be honest. The message of the Gospel is offensive to the unsaved.

It proclaims that we are sinners. That's offensive when most people will tell you, "I'm a good person. I don't kill people or rob banks." Tell someone they are a sinner and they will probably be offended.

It proclaims that our sins are so great that Jesusthe Son of Godhad to die on a cross for our sins to be forgiven. That's really offensive. It tells me that my sins are so bad I deserve to go to Hell, and that I can't work my way into Heaven by doing good deeds, or according to my own merit. It tells me that I am absolutely not a "good person."

It proclaims that we all are accountable to God and that He will judge us. That is very offensive to someone who either doesn't believe in a God, or to someone who won't admit that he has broken God's laws.

It proclaims that we all are hopelessly lost and desperately in need of Christ The Savior.

If you share the Gospel Truth with people... no matter how nice and lovingly you try to do it, the chances are that they will be offended by it.

You, as one who shares God's Truth in love, will be offensive to them.

Look at the Apostles and disciples in the Bible who were jailed, beaten, or killed. They were not persecuted in this way because they "just loved people."

No one is ever persecuted, beaten, or killed for simply being nice.

Please don't misunderstand me.

We are supposed to be loving and nice to people. And in sharing our faith, we should testify of all the good things that God has done in our lives, and how He has blessed us. Never stop doing that, and always give God the glory in the process.

But no matter how impressed someone might be with how God-blessed your life is, and may even say, "I want what you have"make no mistake about it; unless they hear and believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and repent of their sin, and turn to the living God; they will not be saved and born again by the Spirit of God.

When the Apostle Peter gave the fist sermon after the Church was birthed in the Spirit, on the Day of Pentecost, all those men being convicted and cut to the heart, when Peter told them that they had crucified and killed Jesus, who was both Lord and Christ, said, "What must we do?"

Peter said:

“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38)

Paul said:

"If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:9-10)

Even to the ultra-hip, intellectual philosophers in Athens, Paul preached repentance from sin, God's judgement, and Christ's resurrection from the dead:

“Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,  because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” (Acts 17:30-31)

Study the entire book of Acts and see how many times Peter, John and Paul were imprisoned or persecuted for preaching the Gospel, or preaching Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

Paul said:

“And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God.  For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:1-2)

Had these faithful disciples of Jesus Christ not courageously loved God and people enough to boldly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in their day, we might not be where we are today; saved and free in Jesus Christ to boldly and courageously speak the same Truth in love to people in our day.

The Cry of the Martyrs

“Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God” (Revelation 20:4)

Turn on the news today, pick up any newspaper, and you'll likely hear about innocent Christians, young and old, being beheaded in the Middle East by an Is-lam-ic radical group of hateful, blood thirsty murderers. Evil, wicked, and satanic are nowhere near strong enough worlds to describe these devilish killers.

But the cries of these faithful martyrs of Jesus Christ have not gone unheard.

“I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held” (Revelation 6:9)

God has a special place reserved in Heaven for all faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ, who have the testimony of the Gospel of salvation in Christ, who have been killedmartyred for their Christian faith.

And His faithful witnesses today, who are being martyred in much the same way they were 2,000 years ago, are precious to Him, and God will readily receive them up into Heaven with open arms.

Please join me in praying for the faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ all over the world, who are being persecuted daily, some even martyred and tortured to death.

Pray for strength, faith and courage for God's faithful, and for His favor and wisdom for all of us, in these perilous last days of earth as we know it.

God is seated on His throne, and He is in control.

“After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.” Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.  And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.” (Revelation 4:1-3)

Satan is not in control of God's people. We will overcome the devil and all his radical killers, such as those operating in the Middle East today, by our faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” (Revelation 12:11)

For those who have gone on to be with the Lord before us, and for those of us who still anxiously await His imminent return, Jesus made this incredible promise:

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:1-3)

Jesus Christ is faithful and His Word is sure.

We The Redeemed

“For You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” (Revelation 5:9)

The Throne Room of Heaven is where the following proclamation is made by all those believers who freely gave their hearts to Jesus Christprior to the start of the seven year end of days period known as The Tribulation.

It's the Song of the Redeemed.

And it says that they were redeemed by the blood of Christ out of every tribe, tongue, and people, and nation.

It's impossible to miss it, if you are reading and following the flow of the Book, that these redeemed are in the throne room of Heaven before the LambJesus Christbegins to open the seven seals, as described in Revelation 6:1.

"So what?" you may ask.

Namely this; you do not want to go through the Tribulation periodparticularly the last three and a half years, known as the Great Tribulation.

Of this period of time Jesus said:

“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved.” (Matthew  24:21-22)

Imagine, throughout history, throughout all of the greatest times of war, famine, and death, a time that is worse than anything that has ever happened, or ever will happen. That is very scary to think about. Jesus Himself said that is what is coming in the Last Days.

One friend of mine casually shrugs it off by saying, "Oh well, I guess I'm going to be one of those people who go to Hell."

"But you don't have to go to Hell" is what I always reply to my friend.

Do you ever think about it? About what Christ Himself said of the coming Day of Judgementabout how all those who rejected Him will be thrown alive into a lake of fire?

It's no joke my friends. Hell is real and the Day of Judgement is coming, and probably sooner than you may think.

About 2,000 years ago, Paul the Apostle said:

“Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,  because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” (Acts 17:30-31)

"Repent." What does that mean? It literally means to change your mind and think differently afterwards.

"Change my mind about what?"

About the fact that you have sinned and broken God's laws. About the fact that you will never be good enough to work your way into Heaven on your own merit. About the fact that Jesus died on the Cross for you, but you have to choose to believe that truth and accept it. About the fact that you are bound for Hell if you continue to reject Jesus Christ. About the fact that Jesus has demonstrated His love for you but you have done nothing but push Him away.

Please hear the true words of Christ:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.” (John 3:16-20)

Here, Jesus clearly lays out both the love and mercy of God, and the judgment of God.

You need to make a decision about Jesus Christ today...

Tomorrow may be too late.

Joy Juice

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble." (Psalm 91:14-15)

"Oh Lord, please don't let this come back again!"

A couple of weeks ago, an excruciatingly painful neurological condition I have suffered from since 2012, reared its ugly head again. It's called Trigeminal Neuralgiaalso sometimes known as "The Suicide Disease."

I wouldn't wish this condition on my worst enemy.  It seems to come back about every six months. I have not welcomed its return. It feels like someone is stabbing an electrically charged ice pick into my brain. No bueno for sure!

A couple of mornings ago it was at its worst. Simply blinking my eyes caused it to spasm and stab in the left side of my forehead. I got out of bed and went to my spot on the couch in the living room, and I cried out to the Lord. He soon led me to Psalm 91:

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.” (Psalm 91:1-2)

I was both comforted and convicted by this amazing promise from my faithful God.

Comforted, because God loves me, and He is faithful to be the perfect Father I have always desperately needed and wanted. And no matter what, I can always trust in Him.

Convicted, because I have not been intentional about dwelling in the secret place of the Most Highspending intimate time with Him every morning, thanking, praising, and worshiping Him for Who He is.

My average morning, I get up, make the coffee, and sit on the couch trying to wake up slowly, just enjoying the quiet, thinking about life.

But we all know the old saying; "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." In my idle time, my mind tends to wander and the devil can easily tempt my thoughts with all kinds of sinful temptations and fantasies that I have no business entertaining or thinking about.

But this is exactly what my early mornings have been filled with off and on over the last few weeks. And I confess that it's because I have not gone right to the Lord when I wake up, calling out to Him, desiring to spend time with Him; desiring to hear His voice, and enjoy His abiding presence.

Trust me, an idle mind can be, and is easily distracted and tempted by the Tempter of our souls.

And I fell prey to him.

Interestingly enough, when my sinful thoughts fell to their lowest and worst, my neurological condition resurfaced in a painful way.

Coincidence?

I don't believe so.

The Bible says:

"Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man sows, that will he also reap." (See Galatians 6:7).

It's a spiritual law. The principle of sowing and reaping. Some people call it "Karma." Call it what you will. But I'm here to tell you, one way or another, the consequences of our actions will eventually catch up with us.

I don't know how this all works. Whether God directly caused my painful condition to return, or He simply allowed it, is known only to Him.

But the result is, it drew me desperately to Him, and I cried out to Him, seeking Him, repenting of my sin, wanting to be closer to Him. And He met me where I was. He forgave me. And He opened the eyes of my heart and spoke to me through His Word, in the Psalms.

The ending verses of Psalm 91 touched me deeply:

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.” (Psalm 91:14-16)

That morning, when, in my desperation I cried out to the Lord, He heard me and He answered me; giving me grace to set my love upon Him. He granted me repentancethe ability to change my mind and turn from my sin. And even in my pain, the joy of the Lord strengthened me.

The Lord encouraged me to the point that I actually thanked Him for the painful condition because it drew me back to Him and to His continuously abiding presence. Back to the joy of the Lord.

As I shared all this with my wife when she woke up, she came up with the phrase, "Joy Juice."

“Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield.” (See Psalm 91:3-4)

I often forget that the primary way God reveals Himself to us is through His Wordthe Bible. And right there in the last part of verse 4, it says, "His truth shall be your shield."

Jesus said,

"Sanctify them by Your truth. Your Word is truth." (John 17:17)

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6)

The Bible is truth. It's God's word. And Jesus is the Truth and the Word.

So, my reason for sharing my story today, is to encourage you who are suffering to draw near to Jesus, by seeking to know Him more through the glorious pages of the Bible.

And it is my hope and prayer that He will heal your cancer, your dying spouse, your lost children, your broken marriage, or your Trigeminal Neuralgia.

But whatever God decides to do, I pray that you will let whatever causes your suffering, to draw you to His side, to set your love upon Him, to cry out to Him, to know Jesus more, and to thank Him and praise Him for what He has already given you; the hope of glory that is found only in our saving faith in Jesus Christ.

Set your heart and mind on the imminent return of Jesus Christ. Be alert, watching for His coming.

Jesus promised us:

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.  In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.  And where I go you know, and the way you know.” (John 14:1-4)

The joy of the Lord is our strength.

"Joy Juice."

Drink it in!

All Things Made New

“The City had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. Its gates shall not be shut at all by day; there shall be no night there.” (Revelation 21:23-25)

As beautiful as a sunrise can be now, there is coming a time when those who have given their hearts and souls to Jesus Christ will live in eternal light so brilliant, there will be no need of the sun. For Christ shall be the light that illuminates the new heaven, the new earth, and the heavenly city, which God has prepared for those who love Him.

There will also be no night in the new heaven and the new earth. Never any darkness again. Ever.

Can you imagine!

Whenever I get stressed, irritated or depressed, it's because I take my focus off the Lord and look at the darkness and perversity of this current world and its corrupt culture and world system. When the apostle Peter locked his eyes on Jesus, he literally walked on water until he shifted his focus onto the raging storm and waves.

"But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!" And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” (Matthew 14:27-33)

I love this! Peter, beginning to sink into the sea, cried out: "Lord, save me!" And it says, "immediately, Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him."

Many times when I have felt like I was sinking in despair, I too have cried out to the Lord, "Save me!" And He has. God is faithful. And though He never does things exactly how or when I expect Him to, He is always right on time.

Today's message is short and sweet.

Whether you're a Christian who is sinking in despair, or a non-believer who knows of your great need for Jesus, and His great love for you, cry out to Him today; "Lord, save me!" And immediately He will stretch out His hand and save you.

He is faithful, always.
